Here at Quantum we believe in going above and beyond not only in our customer service but also the products that we offer. We work with our customers, both businesses and our neighborhood patrons, to provide them the products and our expertise in the painting process, to help them achieve a flawless finish every time. Below is an outline of the process that were used to achieve our show pieces that we took down to Tampa, Florida for the IBEX show.
Quantum's Answer to creating Beauty and Protecting Teak
Experience the transformative power of Quantum's teak process as demonstrated by the samples you see on display. Our meticulous approach combines advanced techniques and premium products to revitalize your teak, restoring its natural beauty and enhancing its durability.
The Process
- Thorough Cleaning: We begin by carefully wiping away dirt, debris, and any existing coatings from the raw teak surface.
- Smoothing the Surface: Sanding with 220-grit sandpaper ensures a smooth, even finish, providing an ideal base for the subsequent treatments.
- Deep Cleaning: Quantum' SR-002 surface prep cleaner penetrates the teak, removing any residual contaminants and preparing the wood for optimal coating adhesion.
- Moisture Removal and Expansion: Heating the teak to 90℉ expands the wood's pores and stretches the ligand bonds, allowing for better penetration of the coatings and helping to eliminate any lingering moisture.
- QuantumUV Protection: The panels were treated with three coats of QuantumUV, a premium two component varnish designed to protect against UV rays, moisture and fungal decay. The three coats is to make sure the coatings seeps into the pores of the wood and the grain of the wood is completely covered.
- NauticoatXP Finish: Both panels were then finished with 3 coats of NauticoatXP Clear, a high-performance marine clear that delivers exceptional durability, water resistance and a beautiful, glossy finish.
Elevating Your Outboard Motor's Performance and Aesthetics
Discover the exceptional results achieved with Quantum's cutting-edge paint process, meticulously applied to the outboard motor prop. The propeller highlights the transformative power of our advanced coatings, designed to enhance both the durability and visual appeal of your marine equipment.
The Process:
- Meticulous Preparation: Our process begins with a thorough degreasing of the prop, ensuring a clean and primed surface for optimal paint adhesion.
- Metal Etching: The application of Quantum45's 45-ASC-RTU metal etch creates a micro-etched surface, promoting superior bonding between the primer and the metal substrate.
- Primer Protection: A foundational coat of Quantum 45 Strontium Chromate primer provides a corrosion resistant barrier, safe guarding the prop against the harsh marine environment.
- Stunning Silver Dollar Metallic Finish: Two coats of our exquisite Silver Dollar Metallic paint delivers a captivating shimmering effect that adds a touch of elegance to your outboard motor.
- High-Gloss Clear Coat: The final step involves applying two coats of Quantum99 High-Gloss Clear, sealing in the metallic finish and creating a durable, mirror-like shine that resists fading and weathering.
The Test:
When it comes to protecting your boat's aluminum components, durability is key. We put Quantum99 and a traditional powder coating to the ultimate test to see which would stand up to the harsh marine environment. Two aluminum pieces from a leaning post were prepared. One was powder coated, while the other received a thin coat of Quantum45 Strontium Chromate primer followed by tow coats of Quantum99 in Pure White. Both samples were then struck with a hammer to create impact points.
On November 6, 2023 both samples were submerged in saltwater after full cure. Over the following months we observed a stark difference in their performance.
The Results:
Powder coating: Despite its reputation for durability, the powder coating began to bubble and chip in areas that were not struck by the hammer. Areas away from the chip the paint started to bubble not even 3 months after submergence in January 2024.
Quantumm99: The Quantum99 coating showed remarkable resilience. It maintained its integrity, with only minor damage at the impact points.
Conclusion: The results of our experiment clearly demonstrate the superior durability of Quantum99 compared to traditional powder coating. Quantum99 offers exceptional protection against the corrosive effects of saltwater and harsh marine conditions.
From Fairing to Finish: The Quantum Solution
It doesn't take a genius to see the benefits of using Quantum Paint's line of advanced coatings technology. These two panels showcase the process to get a pristine, professional finish and the in-between nitty, gritty steps to achieve this result with both our topcoat systems Quantum99 and NauticoatXP.
The Process
- Building the Foundation: Quantum45-SP-White mixed with our high-build activator Quantum45-AHB-100 was applied. This gives an excellent filling foundation for scratches and gouges, giving you adhesion and holdout properties that provides a great even surface to build on.
- Damage Repair: After sanding the high-build with 80-120 grit, Quantum FC Fairing Compound was applied. Quantum FC fairing compound is a 2 part 100% solids epoxy that spreads effortlessly to fill and level out major damage including dents, dings, scratches, fiberglass repairs, and pinholes on your project's surface. The fairing compound spreads easily and has excellent sanding capabilities to provide a smooth base to work from.
- Priming for Success: After sanding the fairing compound smooth with 80-120 grit sandpaper, Quantum45-SP-White mixed with Quantum45-A-100 Surfacing Primer was applied. This gives excellent adhesion and holdout properties so the topcoat shines through.
- Perfect Finish: After sanding with 220-320 grit sandpaper for a smooth surface, panel was sprayed with three medium coats of our Quantum99 high solids, polyester urethane acrylic hybrid. Panel 2 was sprayed with two medium coats of our NauticoatXP. Both finishes show excellent gloss and DOI. If any imperfections such as trash or dust gets into the topcoat during application, both products are able to be wet sanded, buffe, and polished as soon as the next day.
